1 What Problems Will You Solve With Blockchain?

Problems That Blockchain Can Address In creating a blockchain, organizations need to define the specific problem they are trying to solve.  Distributed ledger technologies — collectively known as blockchain — have burst onto the business scene, accompanied by a significant amount of hype.1 They are widely expected to disrupt existing industries and lead to the creation of new types of companies. But companies should resist jumping on the bandwagon until they first understand what specific problems they can solve with blockchain — and for whom. Thinking about how various activities can help solve problems — for customers, employees, and suppliers — and carefully unpacking those activities, step by step, will help managers identify blockchain solutions that can generate real value. The types of problems that blockchains can solve are far-ranging, spanning many industries and contexts.

2 Artificial intelligence system uses transparent, human-like reasoning to solve problems

Understanding how a neural network comes to its decisions has been a long- standing challenge for artificial intelligence (AI) researchers. The initial model achieved 98.7 percent test accuracy on the dataset, which, according to the researchers, far outperforms other neural module network–based approaches. Named the Transparency by Design Network (TbD-net), the model visually renders its thought process as it solves problems, allowing human analysts to interpret its decision-making process. Now a team of researchers from MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s Intelligence and Decision Technologies Group has developed a neural network that performs human-like reasoning steps to answer questions about the contents of images. These insights allow researchers to teach the neural network to correct any incorrect assumptions.

3 Management Consulting’s AI-powered Existential Crisis

If your boards don’t have independent directors who understand AI and platform business models, you probably don’t have a chance to pivot. New business models are changing the landscape. So how should consulting companies, or any in the services sector, adjust to this new, data- and AI-driven world? We all understand that AI is a disruptive force in the market, but it still takes some convincing for many of us to accept just how deeply AI will affect even highly skilled knowledge- based industries. Accept the fact that all industries are being disrupted by machines and new business models, and consulting will not be spared — no matter how high- end the services.

5 EU Copyright Reform: Parliamentary Vote Seriously Undermines Core Online Freedoms

On 12 September, the European Parliament unfortunately missed the opportunity to redraft the ill-advised copyright provisions adopted in the Legal Affairs (JURI) committee last June.  We will continue to follow the institutional discussions closely and advocate for a progressive, innovation-friendly, and flexible copyright regime in the EU that safeguards internet users’ rights and freedoms. The Parliament missed the opportunity to enable press publishers to act against infringing uses of their publications by providing them with a presumption of representation in court. The provision is thus in violation of fundamental rights and freedoms, as well as EU law.
